LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — After horse deaths marred this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and another occurred days ahead of the world championships, safety at the Breeders’ Cup is under intense scrutiny. “We know equine fatalities is a complicated issue and that’s why we’re continuing to invest in resources,” Drew Fleming, president and CEO of Breeders' Cup Ltd., said Wednesday. Breeders’ Cup officials said his death was due to “a cardiac event.” A required necropsy will determine the official cause. With history in mind, 1/ST Racing is conducting periodic inspections and testing of all racing surfaces before the Breeders’ Cup. ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A horse set to run in this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup died Tuesday at Santa Anita, and a short time later, Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo dropped out of the $6 million Classic. Practical Move was returning from a morning gallop when he experienced a suspected cardiac event, according to a statement from Breeders’ Cup officials. Practical Move won the San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby on his home track before a fever forced him to miss the Kentucky Derby in May. He then took six months off and returned to win a race on Oct. 6 at Santa Anita. Another Breeders' Cup contender who was injured near the end of a workout last Saturday at Santa Anita is not recovering as well as his owner had hoped.

Massimiliano Allegri's side have 17 points, two behind Inter Milan and one behind AC Milan who play Genoa later on Saturday. That doesn’t preclude us from looking at other things, because naturally, we are Juventus," he told DAZN. "We must keep our feet on the ground and bring back what for many years was normality at Juventus, in other words winning games." Substitute Milik doubled the lead after 62 minutes with a header from another corner, which Torino keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic misjudged. "We should’ve gone for the shot to finish off the moves and not allow Torino to stay in the game when they were struggling."

CNN —It was derby day delight for Atlético Madrid, which shocked arch-rival Real Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium in a comprehensive 3-1 victory. “I could have done better, maybe, that’s quite clear,” Ancelotti said after the match, according to Real Madrid. Half-time’s frustration quickly led way to second half blues as Atlético started the second 45 minutes even quicker than the first. Another ball in from the left, another header and another goal – Madrid had been rocked by the Colchoneros’ aerial threat. “The team wasn’t compact, especially in the first half and Atlético capitalized on that.

The death on Saturday added to the recent toll of horse fatalities surrounding the Triple Crown races, after seven horses died at Churchill Downs in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. His colt National Treasure is a 3-1 morning line choice in the Preakness and could provide the stiffest challenge to Mage, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner. Baffert was suspended after Medina Spirit failed a drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Last year, Baffert was serving his Kentucky suspension during the Triple Crown, so the racing commissions in Maryland and New York kept him from the Preakness and the Belmont. After the seven deaths at Churchill Downs ahead of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes officials were taking a cautious approach to pre-race examinations.

CNN —One of the horses scheduled to run before today’s Preakness Stakes, the Bob Baffert-trained Havnameltdown, has been euthanized, after suffering a serious injury in an undercard race this afternoon, officials said. How to watchThe Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Julio Cortez/APThe controversy started after Medina Spirit, who died in December 2021, won the Kentucky Derby two years ago. After the race, Baffert revealed that the horse had tested positive for elevated levels of betamethasone. In February 2022, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced its decision to disqualify Medina Spirit.
CNN —National Treasure won the 2023 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore Saturday evening. The win made Baffert the winningest trainer in Preakness Stakes history and the only trainer to have eight horses win the race. Blazing Sevens placed second, and prerace favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mage placed third in the seven-horse field. The win means no horse will take home the coveted Triple Crown this year, achieved when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in one year. National Treasure was ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who tallied his first win at the Preakness Stakes.
National Treasure, with jockey John Velazquez, edges out Blazing Sevens, with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., to win the148th running of the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Saturday, May 20, 2023, in Baltimore. National Treasure won the Preakness on Saturday in Baffert's return to the Triple Crown trail following a suspension, but it came hours after another 3-year-old colt, Havnameltdown, was put down because of a left leg injury in an undercard race. His defeat, caused by a pace much slower than the Derby, means there will not be a Triple Crown winner for a fifth consecutive year. The thrill of victories by National Treasure in the Preakness and Arabian Lion in an earlier stakes race contrasted with the agony of Havnameltdown's death. Medina Spirit was Baffert's most recent Preakness horse, finishing third.

A horse of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was euthanized at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on the undercard of Saturday's Preakness Stakes. Havnameltdown, a 4-5 favorite in the sixth race, broke down and threw jockey Luis Saez at the top of the stretch. The colt's euthanization comes in the wake of a string of equine deaths leading up to the Kentucky Derby earlier this month at Churchill Downs. Eight horses died in a little more than a week at the famed Louisville course, raising concerns about the sport's treatments of its animals.

With John Velazquez aboard, National Treasure held off a late charge from Blazing Sevens. Kentucky Derby winner Mage finished third, meaning the chestnut colt will not have a shot at becoming U.S. thoroughbred racing's 13th Triple Crown winner. "Losing that horse today really hurt but I am happy for Johnny, he got the win," Baffert said fighting back tears, referring to the jockey. LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Horse racing’s Triple Crown season will move on to the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore later this month after Mage’s win in the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. But racing officials here will be faced with sorting out what went wrong during a Derby week in which a string of horse fatalities put a damper on the sport’s most prominent event. Seven horse deaths have been reported at Churchill Downs since April 27, including two on Saturday in the hours before the Kentucky Derby. The run of tragedies again brings safety issues to the fore in racing, a sport in which a maze of state-by-state regulation, in the absence of an empowered national regulator, has made it difficult to impose reforms.

Mage, who finished second in the Florida Derby last month, finished the 1-1/4-mile race in two minutes and 1.57 seconds. The victory was the first Kentucky Derby win for Venezuelan trainer Gustavo Delgado and Venezuelan Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, who won the Run for the Roses after 16 attempts. Thank you for the opportunity to run this horse, that has a lot of heart."
